Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew)

ROYAL PALACE Located in the heart of Bangkok, the Grand Palace was an ancient residence for King Rama I and King Rama V of the kingdom of Rattanakosin. Today, the place is used to host royal ceremonies and welcome the king's guests, state guests and other foreign dignitaries. It is also a place where the remains of kings and high-ranking members of the royal family were located before the cremation. The Royal Palace is divided into two main areas, which are the Temple of the Emerald Buddha and the royal residence. The latter is divided into three main areas: the External Court, the Central Court and the Internal Court. The External Court departs from the Wiset Chai Si Gate to the Phiman Chai Si Gate and includes the interior walls of the Royal Palace. It is now home to several state offices such as the Bureau of the Royal Household, the office of Her Majesty's main private secretary and the Royal Institute office. The Central Court starts at Phiman Chai Si Gate at Sanam Ratchakit Gate. The area is where important royal ceremonies take place, such as the royal coronation and the royal ceremony of the coronation day. In the Middle Court area are the Phra Maha Monthien buildings, the Chakri Maha Prasat buildings, the Phra Maha Prasat buildings and the Siwalai garden district. The inner court starts from the Gate of Sanam Ratchakit in Thaew Teng, the terraced houses that were formerly the walls of the palace during the reign of King Rama I. The southern area of the inner court was then an area reserved for women only; no man except that the king was allowed to enter the area, where the queens, consorts, consort mothers and the king's daughters lived together with many ladies and servants. The area is no longer used as a residence today. Tips • Please dress properly, covering your shoulders and legs up to your knees • Please bring your passport, often required for entry checks
