Inner City very unique ancient part of Baku. "Icheri Sheher" (the Old City) is Baku’s historical centre, with many of its 12th-century defensive walls still intact.
Within these fortifications are the ancient jewels of Azerbaijan, the Maiden Tower World Heritage and Shirvanshahs’ Palace World Heritage, but also a creative community, local craft stores and even entrepreneurs touting Azeri caviar.
Visitors can stop for a quick qutab (charred, stuffed flatbread) served from a window for a single manat; pause for tea taken with spoonfuls of jam or indulge in an authentic feast with a side of traditional entertainment.

Maiden Tower

The World Heritage Maiden Tower is a 12th-century monument in the Old City, Baku, Azerbaijan.
Along with the Shirvanshahs' Palace, dated to the 15th century, it forms a group of historic monuments listed in 2001 under the UNESCO World Heritage List of Historical Monuments as cultural property, Category III. It is one of Azerbaijan's most distinctive national emblems, and is thus featured on Azerbaijani currency notes and official letterheads.

Palace of the Shirvanshahs

Owing to the invasions of foreign conquerors in the 12-13 centuries, Shirvanshahs started erecting in Baku and Absheron fortress walls, towers and fortifications for defensive purposes on which names of Shirvanshahs and their titles were inscribed. All these are indicative of the independence of Shirvanshahs and big feudal lords.

Aga Mikayil Bath House

Among dozens of sights and architectural structures of Old Baku, its bathhouses can be subsumed under a separate group. Such bathhouses as Gadzhi Gaib, Aga Mikail, Kasum bek, and the famous bathhouses in Shirvanshakh Palace were functioning there.
The general regularities of town planning methods in Baku as well as in the whole East can be traced in bathing building structures. More often bathhouses were built either as part of palace complexes and public buildings, located in the city’s center, or built separately in a city’s service and utility zone.
Special attention must be given to palace bathhouses built in every palace complexes of eastern rulers. Among such Baku’s bathhouses, the one located in the Shirvanshakh Palace, is of special interest. This is a large bathhouse, consisting of 26 premises revealed in the course of the archeological digs of 1939.

Vahid Monument

Miniature Books
